Maltawildplants.com is now considered an online flora of the Maltese islands, portraying more than 900 species of plants found in Maltese habitats. It harbours a forum created in 2005 were memberes discuss topics about the Maltese flora and ID of plants.
Of course I tell you, it is my principle idea of sharing info between us friends! Since it is not a very rare species (eg Orchid) or a species sought for digging/picking, I can freely tell you here.
One of the photos was taken at the Botanical garden called Kenuna, limits of Nadur Gozo. The other was taken in a maquis/garigue around Clapham junction (towards buskett if I remember well)
If you are at Gozo visit the botanical Garden and you find it for sure
1 peplus ssp peplus
2 terracina
2 b pinea
next 2 characias although Maltese plants are strange ("not a very rare sp" you made me laugh. its on the verge of extinction in Malta. in my oppinion that has sth to do with the ban of grazing)
last 2 exigua var pycnophylla (sub) endemic to Malta
Gosh it is true, according to red data book both E. charcias and E. exigua var pycnophylla are rare. The former, I was mislead because I saw several of them at the Botanical garden mentioned, the latter I had the feeling that it was some stunt / young E. pinea!
So now all photo are sorted, except one which I posted prev in another post and had very red lower leaves and stems.
Yes, indeed in that Botanical garden at Nadur there are many of the Maltese rarities, such as Euphorbia characias, both Cistus, Spartium junceum, Anagyris foetida, Ephedra fragilis etc etc. Also a beautiful view of Gozo from up there, and you can see a farm with Ostriches just below the cliff
OK, I got the pic of which is very rare and which is not. I have this tendency to read thngs too fast! I will keep an eye on E. characias on my outings.
Sdravko, you are possibly (!) right on the reddish E. pinea, but I wanted to give it time for opinions of others.
you are forgiven for your mistrust.
e pinea is so variable and grows in so many habitats that i have problems with it myself. i have often to identify strange E. pinea specimen. we are lucky that there are not too many e. sp in Malta or we might confuse e pinea with most of them.
