Can anyone name this plant, south east coast large violet flowers and small succulent leaves.

Thanks for answering. The site is near Fort Ricasoli, there is a small chapel and cemetary for pesta victims just in front of it, the plant was found among rubble as you can see and not in a garden. I thought it was a massive thyme from a far, but actually a succulent small leaved plant.
the photo was taken with a 2 mega pixel mobile phone.
The plant appeared monstrous as you can see growing densely and thickly covering the ground beneath.
Oh and I found your article on the two rocks appropriate and gave me a smile or two to say the least.

From this photo I can suggest two tentative IDs:
i) either Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum, but usually it does not make that much dense flowers (but you never now!) or (ii) a holticulture escape of a plant of the Aizoaceae family
Quick link
eg. a white form of this ornamental:

(copy and paste the url yourself becasue the image is hot-link protected)
Do you remember if the flowers had many slender petals?

The plant is called Disphyma australe, and I saw it again 15.5.2014 and it has doubled in size. Just growing over everything.
