Seems as if he ended up as a meal after mating. What a price to pay !!!

Beautiful pictures, xilpa! The 'dead'-looking spider in your picture is not a dead male, but the discarded exoskeleton of the female which has just moulted.

Many thanks for the info. As I read somewhere that sometimes the female does eat the mate after mating, I took it for granted that this was one such occasin.
