Butterflies

Could someone please help ID these 2 butterlies ? I could not manage to photograph them with wings spread open, which would have made it easier.

Hi,
both pictures are Meadow Brown Maniola jurtina

Based on the shapes of the forewing #1 is probably a female and #2 is probably a male

And yes, open wings would have determined the sex, but there is no question of the species

Many thanks for your help. After having a look at Bonnet's book I did suspect that one of them was a Meadow brown, but they differed so much in markings and colour that I believed they were different spieces.

You are right - they vary A LOT -

see for instance www.leps.it look for jurtina in latin index or meadow in common index.
