Tough leaves with a spiny tip

Anothe strange tree which I dont know from where to start. It had long twigs all covered in whorls of leaves which where tough although thin, and wit ha quite spiny ending. Leaves small and at some intervals becomes big.

The growth habit / shape counts for a lot to ID a tree - or anything. It's good sometimes to stand back and get a distance shot.

Having seen the tree in person, the shape yells out "Auricaria" but 1) I do not know the species or ever actually tried looking; 2) I may be completely wrong.

But there, you have a start

RB, I am pretty sure you have the Genus right. I have been searching about this one after that good start. The tree was out of shape (!) because a big part of it was without leaves and there was a hanging down branch with these long twigs with leaves.

It is Araucaria araucana and forms interesting seed cones

Sorry for the "Auricaria" I just can't help writing it the way these trees are referred to (pronounced) in Malta.

Araucaria has not as yet been mentally registered

Must be the effects of sniffing too much "petlor" hahahaha
