ANother Vicia

Post by MWP admin »

I am not sure, but this must be Vicia sativa. As far as I know there are 3 or 4 subspecies and I wonder if this plant can be identified to subspecies level with the photos submitted?

My little knowledge I have is that if it has a black blob at the stipule (nectary?), it is classified as Vicia sativa subsp. nigra. Although not much visible, the 3rd photo show a black nectary. I am very weak on Vicias.

Any notes or links of how to ID Vicia sativa subsp is welcomed

Thanks JP.

How many subsp. have you seen in Malta. Do you confirm 3 (or more) - Haslam mentions a cetain subsp. amphicarpa - have you ever met it?
