It looks like a gall, a growth of some form, on the underground stems of some form of grass.

As such I do not think that realistically one can identify!

well well, a very wet but not really conspicuous plant!!! :-D which you will find within the next few days during your next forum trip. Is this correct, MWP? :-D

HI Jackpot!!

Yes you (and later pine) are correct - I found this gall (pls confirm JP :!: ) on Zannichellia melitensis. Is it cassed by a parasite or some rare ocassion of hypertrophy?

(RB - we have some experts here :wink: )

you should probably keep the location for a possible paper.
there are, if i remember right, 2 (unpublished) locations worldwide with these aquatic galls, one discovered by Edwin Lanfranco i think, the other by my humble self.
although i gave some material to a german professor who was interested i never got a feedback on the results.

yes, MWP, I confirm that the gall is from Z.m.. Have never seen them in life but I know a student who received a sample from our hotel reception. Know nothing about its biology or the gall producer and, in fact, have never been interested in.

From what I am learning, these 'galls' are most probably hyperthrophy of the stamens :roll:
