I admit that the photo of this plant is quite ambiguos. Another hint - low growing herbaceous annual. Nice carpets sometimes.

ok, so it is Lotus, but cytisoides is an herbaceous perennial, and the other annuals of this genus do not really cover the surface as mats...

I know that I am intervening at this late stage after all the hard work has already been done by jackpot, but it is only now that I think I may know what it is - from the list of plant genera that jackpot has listed, I think it can only be Trifolium. sp

- as to the species - I find them difficult even with nice fresh Trifolium plants let alone with a brownish half dead specimen, but since mwp has said it is very common and sometimes forms nice carpets I say T. nigrescens

- if I am right jackpot does all the hard work and I get the applause

However, I would not agree Trifolium nigrescens but I am willing to trust robcar

I may very well be wrong, but i do think it is Trifolium - as to the species I just put forward a guess based on MWPs clues - there is no way I can honestly try to identify it to the species from that photo

my problem with Trifolium nigrescens is the enlarged (widened) standard and the structure of the calyx elements... However, you might be right with Trifolium, especially with regard to "growing mat-like". Let`s hope that MWP will help...

I think you are probably right regarding the widened standard, which could rule out T. nigrescens - perhaps the shape of the standard looks more like that of T. campestre, which is also common but which does not seem to form such nice mats as those formed by T.nigrescence, of course assuming that I am right about Trifolium - as you said we will have to wait for MWP...

They sometimes form carpets (not as large as T. nig.), but actually the clue was mentioned to help you to guess the Genus part first.
