2 plants from Pembroke

Post by IL-PINE »

Well, been for a brief time at Pembroke and found 2 very strange plants.
The first one is the strangest plant I have ever met. A small bush with small branching stems with a white hair but then ending in spines. Besides there were reddish rounded balls which I do not know if they were flowers or fruits. Could it be the Sarcopterium species recorded from there only?

The other is a miniature Widnet il-Bahar (Palaeocyanus) but has totally different leaves and pinkish flowers. no idea what it is.

Pic 1 is definitely Sarcopterium spinosum. The balls are the fruit. The flowers are rather inconspicuous. (not in Haslam's !!)

About Pic 2, what I can tell so far is that it is an Asteracea family plant, but you may already know that.

Congratulations on Sarcopoteruim. It took me 2 hours to find it when it was in flower.
The other one might be Crupina, but since i have never seen that species i might be wrong.

Thank you very much.
Plant 1 seems to be Sarcopoterium spinosum.
Plant 2 is probably Crupina crupinastrum.

Thanks Sdravko, MWP and Wolf for the identification.

i have no idea on plant identification but at first glance it reminded me of centaurea jacea which i had come across at ricasoli and if i recall well was identified as such by e.lanfranco and d.stevens
