Description, Habitat and Distribution

Preferred habitat in Malta: Clayey fields especially near water courses
Botanical Description: Subglabrous to floccose-tomentose annual or biennial 5-60 cm, with short rootstock and taproot. Stems several, usually branched up to about the middle, erect or ascending, terete and finely striate above. Basal leaves 3-20 x (0.2-)1-5 cm, pinnatisect with remote, linear-lanceolate, entire, leaf-segments but sometimes obovate and subobtuse; rarely leaves linear and entire; cauline similar but often entire. Involucre 7-20 mm, up to 40 mm in fruit. Ligules equalling or up to 33% longer as the bracts, yellow or rarely pale yellow outside without red tones. Achenesup to 17mm, cylindrical, with strong ribs, brownish or greyish. Pappus-hairs as long as the achene, plumose, dirty or brownish-white.

Distributional range: C., S. & S.E. Europe, extending northwards to N. France
