ASPHODELACEAE
Juss.
( Asphodel Family )

Recently placed in the Xanthorrhoeaceae family
Conservative synonym: Liliaceae
Subfamalies: nil.

Family Description: The Asphodelaceae is a sub family of the Liliacea which have the characteristic of having very little roots and no bulbs. They grow from deep rhizomes or tubers. They regularly have branched and conspicuous inflorescenses. They are incredibly able to grow on very little soil and The anatomy is very similar to the Liliaceae , mostly perennial herbs comprising about 280 genera and 4,000 species. The leaves are alternate or less often opposite or whorled. The flowers are often showy and are nearly always bisexual and actinomorphic. The perianth typically consists of two whorls of undifferentiated or weakly differentiated petaloid tepals with 3 distinct members in each whorl, or less frequently all of the segments are connate into a common perianth tube or perigynous or epigynous zone that sometimes has an adnate corona. The androecium usually consists of 6 fertile stamens attached to the receptacle or adnate to the perianth tube but rarely 3, 4, or up to 12 may be found. The gynoecium typically consists of a single compound pistil of 3 carpels, a single style commonly with 3 stigmas, and a superior or less often inferior ovary with 3 locules, each containing several to numerous axile ovules. Rarely there are 2 or 4 carpels and locules with axile placentation or only a single locule with intruded parietal placentation. The fruit is nearly always a capsule or berry.

COLCHICACEAE
DC.
( Colchicum Family )
Conservative synonym: Liliaceae
Subfamalies: nil.

Family Description: The Colchicaceae are plants that grow from underground corms covered in tough papery tunics. The flowers have 3 styles that are free, rather than united into a single stalk. There are six tepal segments: 3 petals and 3 sepals. Each of the 6 anthers is attached at the base of one of the tepal segments. The most familiar genus in this family may be Colchicum, native to Eurasia. Bulbocodium is a genus closely related to Colchicum. Merendera is a genus with Colchicum-like flowers that grows in the Mediterranean, North African, and Middle Eastern areas. The genus Androcymbium is found in the Mediterranean and southward through South Africa. The genus Gloriosa contains the gaudy, vining Gloriosa Lily, which is native to southern Africa. Other genera in this family include Baeometra, Littonia, Sandersonia, and Wurmbea. The older usage of the family Liliaceae was an all-inclusive collection of plants that are considered in most recent classifications to belong to many families in at least two orders, Asparagales and Liliales. The Colchicaceae are still considered part of the Liliales, but separate from the Liliaceae. Colchicum generally resembles to an oversized, fall-blooming crocus, but in fact the two are quite distant both genetically and ornamentally.
