Bee/Wasp with strange large eyes

Post by MWP admin » Mon Oct 31, 2005 9:19 pm

I would like to reckognize this bee/wasp. If someone know the latin name or english name please post here. The zig-zag striped pattern of its eyes is quite spectacular

Large eyed Fly

The book of Guido Bonnet and Joe Attard - 'The Maltese Countryside Volume 2', has a photograph on page 199 of a very similar (if not the same) species called Eristalinus taeniops. This seems to be a kind of fly that mimics bees. I have never seen such an animal in my life!
