Hi, While queing in traffic along the main road of Xewkija to Victoria, I spotted this tree in a front garden. It looked tropical to me, interestingly with the leaves arranged in whorls, long stalked, radiating out like a fan. The inflorescence (or fruit?) was at the top, like reddish horizontal spikes. The tree was some 6m tall and could not examine much else taking photos.

Great, thank you sigra - you are right.
I don't think there is a maltese name, but we can adapt a name quickly:
1) Sigra tal-Umbrella
2) Sigra tal-Qarnit
Thanks ta'! you impressed me

Hi, I am sad that you forgot the book about ornamentals (p 272-275).

Hi Jackpot - how are you???
I am actually more sad with my eyesight that I did not spot the tree after a quick browse in your book. I did not even had an idea on the family to search carefully.
Best regards!

Hello you all,
sorry, I was rather busy in finishing another Malta book-
now its done but difficult to find a publisher.
Pine: you are right- this Schefflera is cultivated pretty rare in contrast to the smaller sisters.
