i'm guessing carobs common animal feed and eaten by Maltese during times of despair during ww2 also important in past production sugar (julep form)

you are right, it isbelived to be the carob tree, Ceratonia siliqua, mentioned in “The Parable of the Lost Son”, Luke 15:11-32 .
