Might be, it`s the joke of today, but the leafs and the stem remind me somewhere to Musaceae and that cannot be.
Lets start with: Monocotyledon?

Not ornamental but apparently cultivated in rows in fields.
Leaves sword shaped and half a metre approx

Me too; I never tried Atriplex, but next year in May i`ll do.
