Hi to everyone,
It came to my mind today: as far as I know there're only 2 seasons in Malta: winter and summer. But in Maltese language there're all 4 words for all 4 seasons (xitwa, rebbiegha, sajf, harifa), though almost no changes between spring and autumn. Besides they all start from 21st day of the month (not from 1st like in my country).
Is there any explanation regarding this?

By the book, we have 4 seasons.
Winter (Xitwa) - 21stDec-20thMarch
Spring (Rebbiegha) - 21stMarch-20June
Summer (Sajf) - 21stJune-20thSeptember
Autumn (Harifa) - 21stSeptember - 20December
They do not really represent the climate as in North Europe or USA, and instead we have a 6 months Summer (May-October where July-Aug are the extremes), a 1-2 month Autumn (Nov/Dec), a 3 months winter (Dec-Feb) and a 2months Spring (Mar-Apr).
In typical countries,
Winter represent snow time, cold and dormancy of nature
Spring = the melting of snow and new growth of plants,
Summer = plenty of sun and flowers, and
Autumn = falling of leaves of decidiuos trees and plenty of rain.
We simply follow the book by definition
It was interesting to know that your seasons start at the first. Could you tell us when the seasons start in Russia?

We have 4 proper seasons. Commonly we say that
Winter is from 1 Dec till 28/29 Feb
Spring is from 1 Mar till 31 May
Summer is from 1 Jun till 31 Aug
Autumn is from 1 Sep till 30 Nov
Unfortunately I've never studied any enviromental subject and have information based on so called common knowledge. I do not know what Russian enviromentalists do, but we always congratulate each other with 1st day of spring, which is (for non-specialists in this case) 1st March.
Originally (I'm talking about Moscow) it does not mean that snow will start melting in March immidiately. Sometimes there's no snow in January and snow in May, but generally above mentioned pattern works.
In Malta I noticed that some Maltese people hesitate (it takes time to get into memory maybe) in telling me Maltese words for "spring" and "autumn", though they exist in the language.
