What factors determine when a tree will lose its leaves?

Duration of light and temperature are the most important. Probably the combination of the two is more exact so as to avoid the adverse climate condition of winter and frost. Usually this is a decrease of both factors (decrease in light and temp) but it is the opposite for some plants who drop their leaves in Summer to avoid the hot and arid environment (=aestivation)
