Maltese names of these plants

Post by MWP admin » Tue Sep 06, 2005 10:34 pm

I would like to know the Maltese names of the following 2 species found in Malta since there where no names mentioned mentioned in the book by S.M. Haslam (A fora of the maltese islands)

1) Chrozophora tinctoria (Southern chrozophora)

2) Xanthium strumarium (Rough Cocklebur / Common Cocklebur)

:?: :?: :?:

The Maltese name of Chrozophora tinctoria (Southern Chrozophora) is, as far as I know, Turnasol. Regards, HC Weber

Could be turnasol

Yes it makes sense becasue in general it is also known as turnsole. However turnsole also refers to Heliotropium europaeum. Also I found out that in Arabic this plant is called Faqqus il-Hmir (If the doc was correct), wheras in Malta this refers to the echballium elaterii,

The english name Dyer's Litmus is more used than Southern Chrozophora I think.

Well a A plant of misnomers! :?

Thanks
