Excellent ID

Excellent Keith, you are right. This is then not a wild plant but a veg.

More info on the globe artichoke in this link for the interest of general public and neo-farmers!

Thanks Keith!

Liliaceae?

Symmetry of flower is 6-merous and the globose carpel and stout style reminds me a bit of some Liliaceae members, which have some spicy vegetables too.

How warm is getting ?

Lower leaves bringd the verdict

Both species are quite similar, but the most significant distinction is in the dimensions/shape of lower/middle leaves If as long as broad (rather circular) = C. opulifolium If longer the broader (more or less oval) = C. album Another less important distinction is the colour of the stem. The album t...

Plenty found at mistra

I suffer from curiosity and impatience. After work I went to Mistra as Weber described. At first I jad some difficulty to spot any plant because I was looking for it at the maquis atop the hill, just beside the fire brigade complex. Then I saw it further down the hill near the beginning of that stai...

deeper research

As I said I did a quick look at the Bible, and there is a B&W illustration of Rumex bucephalorus (Plate V) which at a glance was somewhere alike. As you know the illustrations are crappy and not reliable. Personally I did not encountered this plant but I will make a deeper research when I am a bit f...

Orange and black (Striped) beetle like insect

I would like to identify this little insect to include it in the Maltese wild nature page. Maltese name also if possible. I could not spot it in the Wildlife of the Maltese islands book, or the illustrations are not very clear.

Colours quite interesting

Solution

I found on the net a technique which i think it worked. 1: flood pot in water for 20mins to suffocate worms 2: pour water from a tap gently in pot leaving it to pass from the bottom pf the pot for about 5-10mins 3) apply a suitable pesticide 4) leave in the sun to make the soil dry as quick as possi...

So I am quite late!!!

Ischnoderma resinosum

From several sources that I read now I am quite confident that it is Ischnoderma resinosum , due those droplets which are described as resin (as the species name suggest itself). As far as I read, the Ganoderma spp. do not produce those droplets. Below are some links about I. resinosum Link 1 Link 2...

Ganoderma for sure

I am reading several sources and I still have no definite conclusion. I was surely not born a mycologist! Ganoderma spp. seams quite a close ID and the probable species would be: Ganoderma lucidum or Ganoderma tsugae - varnish shelf fungus [ more info... ] Though then I met a photo of Ischnoderma re...

There is a special Library called Melitensia and one should find all books related to Malta including about environment and flora. Found what looks to be a Smilax aspera

Today I was roaming around near the Verdala palace (Siggiewi side) and about 200-300m away I got lost into some nice steppe facing Girgenti/Buskett. I came across a strange 'weird like' climber which was not yet in flower, but its leaves were quite interesting per se. They have a rather larrge trian...

A Common vegetable or a wild Plant ?

I went for a short walk around Verdala Palace and I met 2 unfamiliar plants to me. One is revealed in this post, the other I will make some research before I write about it in another post. There was a field which was bare except 2 or 3 large plants with multi lobed large leaves, as seen in tha atta...

A new plant profile has been added to the database and now there is a total of 56 plants. The plant is Clematis cirrhosa (Evergreen Traveller's Joy) a member of the Ranunculaceae (Buttercup) family. Have to add few more photos when the seeds are ripe. It is becoming quite scarce in Malta and especia...
