Shrew

Probably not at all uncommon, but very secretive. This is the second one (or maybe third, I forgot) I have ever seen, i would imagine that if they enter houses (not a common occurrence) they would be thought to be mice and annihilated. On the contrary to mice however these are highly beneficial crea...

Yes, there are quite a number of country-roadside specimens around Santa Lucia, Ghaxaq, Birzebbugia, etc, the general area. Weber says it's rare, but I guess that it's not really. The dispersal method probably explains why it is predominantly a roadside species ("velcro" seeds) and thus dogs, previo...

It looks like a gall, a growth of some form, on the underground stems of some form of grass.

As such I do not think that realistically one can identify!

One small detail about bookmarking http://www.maltawildplants.com/forum which would be ideal - this doesn't work.

This redirects to http://wildplants.marz-kreations.com/forum/ where login is requested.

If the direct bookmarking were possible this would be much better!

Website - Java applets

Just my personal thoughts, but I would much rather not have any java applets on any of the pages as these slow the page load for 2 reasons: The actual files have to all be downloaded; Java VM has to be started on one's computer. What is Java VM? Well Java is both a programming language and a platfor...

Yes it's true, in Sicily sometimes you get hillsides completely yellow with this, even volcanoes

I suppose its the same species.

I never saw/noted in Buskett, where?

Maybe in Malta these were cut down for burning, I guess that once dried the plants burn extremely well.

Nice colour, wonder whether the variety or the temperature, as they 'common' variety can have some violet in it and at this time of year maybe it is more obvious. There are some highly fascinating passiflora sp and varieties, some are amazing, in shape and colour, surprised we don't get them here - ...

Your second pic is not the plant in the first photo, that is for sure. In pic 1 it's either julibrissin or lopaphanta, very difficult without the flowers. The density of the leaflets is an important identifier, as against lebbeck, and conclusive is the seed pod, lebbeck makes straight seed pods 20cm...

Cycas revoluta, try collecting some seeds as they mature a bit more. They germinate VERY VERY slowly! I collected some seeds in summer, important to do a flotation check (put in water for some hours, ones that float or rattle, throw away, old seeds likely will not be good), allow to soak for about a...

Chorisia speciosia, Silk floss tree. I always try to get some seeds, and this year I managed ;-) but only about 3!! Broom species

I was surprised to hear that broom is found in the wild in Malta (or maybe Gozo). Is this really so?

I found this plant near Rabat, but it is very possible (likely) to be planted.

Can anyone offer any more info about broom species in the wild in Malta/Gozo?
