Actually looking it up here (thanks MWP) it's "probably" http://www.maltawildplants.com/FABC/Lat ... ymenum.php as I have never seen L. odoratus in the wild. I have in Sicily though, its flower is much much larger than L. clymenum.

This is Cydonia oblonga. We make juice, jelly, liqueur or liquor from the fruit. Monika Tasted jelly-like dessert in Sicily beginning of this month made from "melocotone", apparently it is a typical sweet for that period. It was delicious, it looks like regular jelly so I was not expecting much, bu...

Wonder whether "hatab" was actually collected for burning - as in the common reference to hatab as general brushwood specifically for the fire i.e. whether our common usage of this word was derived from this plant and its previous purpose. It grows and propagates somewhat slowly I suspect that if it...

Probably too much water - probably needs growing in pure compost as it is difficult to maintain correct humidity levels in a pot when using any local soil. I tend to lose Cistus that way, this year have sown in a mix of compost and a decent percentage of Etna lava sand which makes the medium very ve...

It usually flowers in late spring, is not very common, usually in disturbed ground - in fields that are left fallow, etc. I believe this is also a cultivated flowering plant, probably with care the flower display is much more impressive, I once grew Verbascum sinuatum and it bore little comparison t...

Top one, "hatab" is the Maltese name, need to look up the Latin... bottom is an escaped ornamental, Lantana camara, available in a zillion different colours and very popular with butterflies such as the Red Admiral and Painted Lady. Actually correction, MWP says Lantana montevidensis for the trailin...

Hi MWP, just wondering, is the OP mefunx a non registered guest? (I need to add I don't have any problem at all with the OP!) His username is not clickable so I suspect as much. In fact before answering I thought he had deregistered himself and may not even view my reply. Just asking if perhaps by s...

Well, it's raining!
So officially the season is open
Nice to (eventually) get a change of colour in the countryside. Mind you, Gozo was already greening last week.
As you must know MWP!

"Dix Points" :-D Yup that's it 100% I confirm I have seen this before in Sicily in several places but only now bothered. Incidentally and unrelatedly, saw a lot of Sage (Salvia, not Phlomis - although they share the same habitat and are commonly found together) of which as far as I know there is non...

Grass ID please?
I saw this in Sicily, but recall, and after searching, found this thread: http://www.maltawildplants.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1220&highlight=grass+bahrija BUT - it's not it. Or at least, it's not Cortaderia, I do not know whether or not MWP's find was actually that, perhaps without seeing the the i...

I take the example above as a perfect representation of the farce that is "protection", in both senses, both as being unreasonable and stupid in many instances, and meaningless in others. Those orchids may well be protected, but as soon as any plans are finalised for that prime site, that rock will ...

If the "default" species, as I suspect, they are not rare, just a bit "old skool" and more likely to be found in old houses possibly with old owners, they are typical house plants of days gone by together with "Felci", Aspidistra, and Galletti. I once swiped a tiny one growing at the entrance to a c...
