99% it is a larva of a water beetle, the ones which grow up to 4 cm in lenght, and are black in colour with a yellow stripe all way round when mature. Unfortunately this creature is diminishing from our islands, cause I can recall more of them myself when I was young. Bdw, Be careful from that larva...

I was told that the roots release certain chemicals (by someone who calls himself an expert ! :D ) so 10x Robcar for giving me the correct answer. I also agree with Stephen that these trees should not be cut down or burnt ( again suggestions from an expert,) but should be left to grow as they are. T...

I remember those lectures well Steve, and sometimes it's hilarious what comes out of these 'extremists' mouths :!: I also have regularly encountered vegetation under these trees, and thats why I was suspisious. I think that maybe the lack of vegetation in some cases is due to the huge span of the tr...

Eucalyptus
I was wondering on what are the real negative effects of Eucailypts in our islands. Many say that these trees do not allow vegetation growth in the areas beneath them, because of certain chemicals they release from their roots, although I have never been 100% sure about this. What do you think about...

We got there with a very small dinghy :P ...... It was fine in the morning as the current favoured us, but the sea got rougher in the afternoon so we found it very difficult to paddle back. Fortunately enough, a small motor boat passed by and towed us to mistra half way through  The vegetation...

Well, on a hot winter day lizards do go out to absorb the suns radiation. They do not usually hibernate in our islands, as the temp. is not so cold, although you are right when saying that their activity decreases during the cold months. When compared to results of the no. of lizards spotted in wint...

Selmunett Wall Lizard
Last Wednesday was a beautiful sunny and warm winter day, so my friend and I decided to go to Saint Pauls Island. Our intention was to record and observe the kieselbachi sub-species of the Maltese wall Lizard. We arrived there at mid-morning, but to our disappointment we could not even spot one sing...

Hi Stephen, according to the Wildlife of the Maltese Islands , the Bracket Funghus is botanically named as Phellinus rimosus , while in The Maltese Countryside , it is listed as Ganoderma sp. I then searched through Google, and found that the Ganoderma sp, is the one that mostly resembles the one in...
