This is one of the several species of hoverflies found in Malta. It is relatively small (about 1cm long) and not very very frequent. The larvae can be found feeding on aphids so it has an important ecological function as biological pest control. The species is typically found near trees and high vegetation, especially close to water courses. It can be also seen near urban areas. Adults are actually found at a wide range of flowers, but are perhaps equally frequently seen settled on sunlit foliage, as some of the photos below were taken.
