Further Information:
A species of bee quite distinct from the honey bee by having a black body covered with reddish-brown hairs. It has the ability to mine nesting holes in ground, or construct them with a cement produced from dust and sand particles in which it nests. In the nesting period, they can be seen flying low to the ground, seeking a good nesting spot. It is also known with the synonymous name - Chalicodoma sicula. It is the specific pollinator of the endemic orchid - Ophrys melitensis.
