Further Information:
This family of flies have a number of closely related species making identification rather difficult sometimes. However, they have in common a characteristic slender cylindrical abdomen, often reddish brown marked with black and sometimes white as is this species. It is often found on plants of the families Apiaceae (carrot/celery) or Asteraceae (daisy/sunflower). This particular specimen was photographed at Zebbug, Gozo on May 2012.
