The genus is considered to occur primarily in the Mediterranean, and some species such as Cernuella virgata are significant invasive species, agricultural pests, in parts of Australia. Cernuella species (namely C. virgata) has been recovered from the Roman Empire occupation of Volubilis, an archaeological site in present day Morocco.

Cernuella caruanae is endemic to Malta and Sicily and introduce in Libya. Identification of the species of Cernuella is assured only by anatomical dissection.
